The Art of Reconciliation

Theories of photography have traditionally been divided between essentialism, which seeks to define the unique properties of the medium and pragmatism, which investigates how certain properties of the photographic image have been constructed and maintained by popular belief and actual practices. Between these bifurcated strands is where most recent contributions try to open new ground. With the concept of Photographic Space this lecture will seek to develop from the hermeneutic and poststructuralist traditions a critique of dominant notions such as 'indexicality' and 'punctum' in order to raise from a new perspective the question of photographic presentation.
